Hamburg - The dethroned German handball champion HSV Hamburg may hope for his sixth Champions League participation in a row despite a weak season. As the European Handball Federation (EHF) announced on Thursday, the team of coach Martin Schwalb will receive a wildcard for the qualifying tournament on 8 and 9 September. The venue will be announced by the EHF shortly, and Hamburg has also applied as host.

"We are pleased to be allowed to participate in the Wildcard Tournament and still have the chance to win the Champions League after the difficult season. We will do our utmost to win the tournament in order to be able to offer our fans international top handball in the upcoming season, "said Hamburg's Managing Director Christoph Wendt.

In addition to the HSV, the Danish runner-up Bjerringbro-Silkeborg, Saint-Raphael Var Handball as third-placed in the French league and the Polish runner-up Wisla Plock will participate in the tournament. Only the winner will play in the premier class in the upcoming season.

Hamburg had missed the direct participation as fourth of the last Bundesliga season. Should the qualification fail in the wildcard tournament as well, Pascal Hens and Co. would have to compete in the new EHF Cup.
